Species of Rats & Mice

Three commensal rodents live alongside people in Indian cities, and their habits determine where treatment goes.

Roof rat / black rat (Rattus rattus)

Excellent climber, slim with a tail longer than its body. Lives in false ceilings, lofts and upper floors — the most common flat-dwelling rat.

Heavier bodied, burrows at ground level near drains, compound walls and garbage points. Dominant in basements and stilt parking.

Small, curious and constantly exploring; nibbles at many food sources rather than committing to one. Needs very little water.

Large burrowing rat common in Indian urban areas, associated with drains, gardens and godowns; causes significant burrow damage.

Climbing species require treatment at ceiling and duct level; burrowing species require ground-level burrow baiting. Most Mumbai buildings have both.
