Signs of Bed Bugs

Bites alone are unreliable evidence — reactions vary enormously and some people show none. Look for physical evidence around the bed.

Bite pattern

Small itchy welts in a line or cluster of three to four, typically on arms, shoulders, neck and legs exposed while sleeping.

Small rust-coloured smears on sheets where a fed bug was crushed during the night.

Tiny black dots that bleed into fabric like ink, concentrated along mattress seams and headboard edges.

Translucent casings and 1 mm pearly white eggs in mattress piping, box-spring corners and screw holes.

Flat oval adults in the seams; newly fed ones appear swollen and darker red.

Heavy infestations produce a distinctive coriander-like smell near the bed.

Inspect with a torch at the mattress seam, headboard back and bed-frame joints — that trio holds the majority of a typical infestation.
