Bed Bugs in Mumbai: Identification & Control
Bed bugs are hitchhikers, not a hygiene failure. They arrive in luggage, second-hand furniture and shared transport, and they hide within two metres of where you sleep.
A bed bug is roughly the size and shape of an apple seed — 4 to 5 mm, flat, reddish-brown, and able to squeeze into a gap the width of a credit card. That flatness is why they are so hard to find: mattress piping, headboard joints, screw holes in bed frames and the underside of side tables are all viable harborage.
They feed on blood for 5–10 minutes at night and then retreat. A single female lays 200–500 eggs in her lifetime, and nymphs can survive months between meals, which is why leaving a room empty does not solve an infestation.
Bed bugs do not transmit disease, but the sleep disruption, anxiety and repeated allergic skin reactions they cause are genuinely serious for affected households.
How Mumbai homes pick them up
- Hotel and hostel stays, especially for people travelling frequently for work — bugs travel home in suitcase seams.
- Second-hand and rented furniture, particularly mattresses, sofas and wooden bed frames from resale markets.
- Shared PG accommodation and hostel dormitories, where one infested bed spreads down a row.
- Adjoining flats in older buildings — bugs migrate through wall cracks and shared conduit when a neighbouring unit is treated poorly.
Why they are hard to eliminate
Eggs are cemented into crevices and are resistant to most contact insecticides. Any treatment that does not either reach the eggs or repeat at the right interval leaves the infestation intact. Populations in India also show measurable resistance to older pyrethroid chemistry, so rotation of active ingredients matters.
What does not work
Throwing out the mattress usually spreads the infestation rather than ending it, because bugs are already in the frame and skirting. Naphthalene balls, room fresheners and generic aerosol sprays have no meaningful effect on a mature population.

Bed Bugs: frequently asked questions
Do bed bugs mean my house is dirty?
No. Bed bugs feed on blood, not food waste, and are carried in on luggage, furniture and clothing. Spotless homes and hotels get infestations just as often.
Can bed bugs live in my clothes or hair?
They hide in folded clothing and luggage but do not live on the body or in hair the way lice do. They feed and then return to a harborage nearby.
How long can bed bugs survive without feeding?
Adults can survive several months without a blood meal at room temperature, which is why vacating a room for a few weeks does not clear an infestation.
Is one treatment enough?
Almost never. Eggs are resistant to most residual products, so a follow-up at around 14 days after the first treatment is required to catch newly hatched nymphs.
Should I throw away my mattress?
Usually not. Discarding a mattress often spreads bugs through the building and leaves the frame population untouched. Encasement plus treatment is more effective and cheaper.
