Species of Bed Bugs
Two species bite humans, and a few look-alikes cause frequent false alarms.
Two species bite humans, and a few look-alikes cause frequent false alarms.
Common bed bug (Cimex lectularius)
The dominant species in Indian homes; tolerates a wide temperature range and is the one behind most residential infestations.
Tropical bed bug (Cimex hemipterus)
Widespread in warm coastal regions including Mumbai. Visually near-identical, with a slightly narrower thorax; treatment approach is the same.
Bat bugs
Very similar in appearance but associated with bat roosts in lofts and ducts; the roost must be resolved or they keep returning.
Carpet beetle larvae
Frequently mistaken for bed bugs. Hairy, bristled and feed on fabric fibres rather than blood — a completely different treatment.
Confirm identification before treatment; carpet beetle and bat bug problems do not respond to a bed bug protocol.
