Ants in Mumbai: Identification & Control
Ant trails are a symptom; the nest is the problem. Spraying the trail kills foragers and often causes the colony to split and spread.
Ants are social insects with a colony that can hold thousands of workers and, in some species, multiple queens. The ants you see on a kitchen counter are foragers — usually less than a tenth of the colony — following a chemical trail laid by scouts to a food source.
This is why surface spray backfires. Killing the visible trail removes foragers but leaves the queen producing replacements, and with some species the disturbance triggers budding, where part of the colony relocates and forms a second nest.
The reliable approach is slow-acting bait that foragers carry back and share through the colony, reaching the queen.
Common ant pressure points in Mumbai flats
- Kitchen platforms and sugar or honey storage — the classic sugar-ant trail.
- Bathroom and balcony wall cracks where pharaoh and ghost ants nest in warm, damp voids.
- Potted plants on balconies, which frequently arrive with an established nest in the soil.
- External wall cracks and window frames that become entry points during the monsoon as nests flood.
Why spray makes it worse
Repellent sprays cause colony budding in species such as the pharaoh ant: workers scatter, satellite nests form, and one trail becomes three. Non-repellent baiting is deliberately slow so that workers survive long enough to distribute the active ingredient throughout the colony.
Following the trail back
Trails almost always lead to a wall crack, skirting joint, window frame gap or potted plant. Locating the entry point tells you where the nest is, and treatment placed at that point is far more effective than treatment on the counter.

Ants: frequently asked questions
Why do more ants appear after I spray?
Repellent sprays can trigger colony budding in species like pharaoh ants, splitting one nest into several. Non-repellent baiting avoids this.
Are ants in the kitchen a health risk?
Some species, notably pharaoh ants, can carry bacteria across surfaces. Most household ants are primarily a contamination nuisance rather than a disease vector.
Should I wipe away the ant trail?
Not while baiting. The pheromone trail is what brings workers to the bait and back to the colony. Wipe it only after activity has stopped.
How long does ant baiting take to work?
Visible reduction usually begins in three to seven days, with full colony elimination in two to three weeks depending on colony size.
Do carpenter ants damage buildings like termites?
They excavate nesting galleries in damp or decaying wood rather than eating it. Damage is slower than termite damage but still needs the moisture source resolved.
