Signs of Ants

Ant problems announce themselves clearly — the useful diagnostic work is identifying where the trail originates.

Persistent trails

A steady line of ants along a counter edge, skirting or wall crack, strongest in the early morning and evening.

Ants concentrating at a single crack, socket or window frame gap indicates the nest is behind it.

Small mounds of fine soil at wall–floor junctions or on balconies where a nest has been excavated.

Swarming alates signal a mature colony nearby that has begun producing reproductives.

Several unconnected trails often mean a budded colony with more than one nest site.

Some species nest inside switchboards and appliance housings for the warmth.

Note the trail's direction of travel — foragers carrying food are heading home, which points you to the nest.
