Mosquitoes in Mumbai: Identification & Control

Mumbai's monsoon turns every uncovered container, blocked gutter and unused water tank into a mosquito nursery — and with it comes dengue, malaria and chikungunya risk.

A mosquito only needs a bottle cap of stagnant water to complete its life cycle, and that cycle takes as little as seven days in Mumbai's warm, humid conditions. That speed is why mosquito numbers explode within a fortnight of the first sustained rains.

Aedes aegypti, the dengue and chikungunya vector, bites during the day and breeds in clean stored water — meaning indoor containers, plant trays and overhead tanks matter more than dirty drains. Anopheles, the malaria vector, and Culex, which spreads filariasis and causes most night-time nuisance biting, breed in different water types again.

Effective control therefore means source reduction across all three water profiles, not just fogging the air.

Mumbai's mosquito breeding hotspots

  • Overhead and underground water tanks left uncovered or poorly sealed — prime Aedes habitat.
  • Plant saucers, money-plant bottles and balcony drainage trays inside flats.
  • Construction sites with curing water, a documented driver of local dengue clusters.
  • Blocked terrace drains and chhajja ledges that hold rainwater for days after a downpour.
  • Air-conditioner drip trays and refrigerator defrost pans.

Why fogging alone does not work

Thermal fogging kills adults flying at the time of treatment and has almost no residual effect. Without larviciding the water sources, the next generation emerges within a week and numbers return to baseline. Fogging is a knockdown tool used alongside source reduction, never instead of it.

Community-level control

Mosquitoes routinely fly 100–200 metres, so treating a single flat while the building's tanks, terrace and compound go untreated gives limited relief. Society-wide programmes consistently outperform individual flat treatments.

Mosquitoes: frequently asked questions

How long does it take mosquitoes to breed?

Egg to flying adult takes about seven to ten days in Mumbai's climate, which is why weekly emptying of containers breaks the cycle.

Does one uncovered bucket really matter?

Yes. Aedes aegypti routinely breeds in a few centimetres of clean water, and a single container can produce hundreds of adults per cycle.

Are mosquito coils and liquid vaporisers enough?

They reduce biting in one room for a few hours but have no effect on breeding sites, so the population outdoors remains unchanged.

Is fogging safe for children and pets?

Approved fogging formulations are safe once the mist has settled, typically 30–60 minutes. Occupants are asked to stay out during application as a precaution.

Why do mosquitoes come back a week after treatment?

Because adults were killed but larvae were not. Without larviciding the water sources, a fresh generation emerges within days.
