Signs of Cockroaches
Cockroaches are nocturnal, so a daytime sighting usually means the harborage is overcrowded — an indicator of a mature infestation, not an early one.

Droppings
Black pepper-like specks along cabinet edges, in drawers and behind the fridge. American cockroach droppings are larger, with blunt ends and ridges.
Smear marks
Irregular dark brown streaks on horizontal surfaces and wall–floor junctions in humid areas.
Egg cases (oothecae)
Brown, purse-shaped capsules 6–10 mm long glued into crevices, often behind hinges and under shelves.
Shed skins
Cockroaches moult 5–8 times; papery translucent casings collect near nesting sites.
Musty odour
A distinct oily, musty smell in a closed kitchen cabinet points to a large established population.
Daytime activity
Roaches running across a lit floor in the day indicates the hiding spaces are already full.
