Drain Flies vs Fruit Flies: How to Tell Them Apart
Tiny flies in the bathroom and tiny flies near the fruit bowl are usually two different insects. Knowing which one you have tells you where they are breeding, and that is what you need to fix.
Small flies are common in Mumbai homes, especially in humid months. Most of the time they are either drain flies, which breed in the slime inside drains, or fruit flies, which breed in ripe fruit and food waste.
They look similar at a glance, but they live in different places. Spraying the flies you can see rarely helps for long, because new ones keep hatching from the source.
Why small flies are common in Mumbai homes
- Humid weather helps both drain flies and fruit flies breed quickly.
- Bathroom floor traps and kitchen sink drains build up slime that drain flies breed in.
- Fruit, vegetables and wet waste kept out in warm kitchens attract fruit flies.
How to tell them apart
Drain flies are fuzzy, grey or dark, with broad, moth-like wings held flat over the body, and they tend to rest on bathroom walls near the drain and fly weakly. Fruit flies are smaller and slimmer, tan or brown, often with red eyes, and they hover around fruit, the bin and the kitchen sink. Where you see them most is usually the best clue.
Where each one breeds
Drain flies lay eggs in the film of slime inside drains, floor traps, overflow holes and rarely used sinks. Fruit flies breed in overripe fruit and vegetables, spilled juice, wet waste, empty bottles and damp cleaning cloths. To check a drain, tape a clear plastic sheet over it overnight; flies stuck to the underside in the morning suggest the drain is the source.
How to get rid of drain flies
Scrub the inside of drains and floor traps with a stiff brush to remove the slime, then flush with hot water. Clean overflow holes and run water through sinks and showers that are rarely used. Fix leaks and standing water around the bathroom. Pouring a cleaner without scrubbing usually leaves the slime, and the flies, behind.
How to get rid of fruit flies
Keep ripe fruit in the fridge or covered, empty kitchen bins daily and rinse bottles before storing them. Wipe up spills and wash or dry cleaning cloths. A small bowl of vinegar with a drop of dish soap can trap adults, but the flies return unless the breeding source is removed.
When to call for professional fly control
If flies keep appearing after drains and kitchen waste are cleaned, the source may be in a hidden drain, a broken pipe or a shared drainage line. For homes and food businesses, our fly control service starts with a survey of breeding sites and includes drain treatment and UV fly traps.

Drain Flies vs Fruit Flies: frequently asked questions
What are the tiny flies in my bathroom?
Small, fuzzy, moth-like flies resting on bathroom walls are usually drain flies breeding in the slime inside drains and floor traps.
Why do fruit flies keep coming back?
They keep breeding in ripe fruit, wet waste or spills. Remove the source and the numbers drop.
Does pouring bleach down the drain stop drain flies?
Often not on its own. The slime layer needs to be scrubbed out for the flies to stop breeding.
Are drain flies harmful?
They do not bite, but they breed in dirty drains, so it is best to keep them away from food areas.
