Indian buildings deal with a small number of economically important species, split between soil-nesting and wood-nesting groups.
Coptotermes heimi
The principal structural pest across western India. Subterranean, aggressive, and responsible for the majority of building damage claims.
Odontotermes obesus
Mound-building subterranean species; attacks timber, garden trees and stored material, common in compounds and landscaped areas.
Microcerotermes species
Builds carton nests and attacks structural timber, often noticed in older wooden roofing members.
Cryptotermes (drywood termites)
Nest inside the timber itself with no soil contact. Produce distinctive gritty pellets and require timber-focused treatment rather than a soil barrier.
